An Overview of the Vietnam WarKnown as the first ‘televised’ conflict, the Vietnam war began in the 1950s and came to an end in the 1970s. The opposing sides of this conflict were the Communist regime of North Vietnam, including their southern allies, against South Vietnam and the United States. The Vietnam war began in 1954 after the rise of Ho Chi Minh and communist forces. This conflict continued against the backdrop of the already brutal Cold War. At the peak of US involvement during 1969, more than 500,000 military were involved. More than 3 million people were killed during the Vietnam war, including civilians.

Towards the End... |
After brutal images and footage of the war was televised, US citizens started to challenge the decisions of their government and oppose the US involvement in the war. After the backlash from the public, President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of US troops from the war in 1973. After communist forces took control of Saigon in 1975, a year later the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
